I did not know that this was a thing, but apparently it is because it’s happening next week. Certain neighborhoods in Sacramento and Elk Grove are more at risk for West Nile virus than others. So, Monday and Tuesday they will receive aerial insecticide sprayings.

You can check out the map here to see where the sprayings will occur. However, they are mostly south of Fruitridge, in the Pocket and in Elk Grove. Aerial insecticide sprayings will happen between 8 PM and midnight.

According to Fight The Bite, aerial sprayings reduce the amount of adult mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus. The program collects mosquitoes and chooses where to spray based on which ones are infected.

The website also says, “at the rates we apply these products (3/4 oz or less per acre), they should not pose a significant risk to you.” But, they also encourage you to stay inside when the spraying occurs.

I get that it’s for our benefit, but it still sounds scary.
