Here’s some more evidence of the intelligence of monkeys. Several baboons used a 55-gallon barrel to briefly escape from the Texas Biomedical Research Institute.
The baboons rolled the barrel upright near a wall of their open-air enclosure. They then climbed the barrel to escape.
The researchers placed the barrel in the enclosure for the animals to use as an enrichment tool, reports SF Gate. The team believed it would help the baboons mimic foraging behavior. However, after the escape, the enclosure went through modifications and the barrel was removed.
Lisa Cruz, Assistant Vice President for Communications, said:
“This was truly a unique incident. We have been caring for research baboons for more than 50 years. We have nearly 1100 baboons on the property that date back eight generations.”
The research facility houses over 2,500 animals. Scientists conduct research on the animals to help develop vaccines and medicines.
