California Real IDs Are Causing Wait Times Up To Three Hours At The DMV

If you have to get a new ID, and you want the California Real ID, you better make an appointment. Because Sacramento-area DMV locations have been swamped lately, with wait times reaching over three hours according to KCRA.
In fact, I looked up wait times while writing this and the shortest time was at the Folsom DMV. But, it was four minutes shy of two hours. The non-appointment time at the Carmichael location was 2:46, which the appointment time was at nine minutes. So yeah, big difference.

You’ll need to schedule your appointment a little ways out. So, if you can make one down the road before your current ID expires, that’s the best bet. If you want that California Real ID, make sure you bring the proper documents. Remember, if you don’t have one, you’ll need your passport to fly—even just domestic.
For the Real ID, you need to apply in person. You also need one document with your address, one with your social security number and one with your identity. See more at the DMV’s website.
