This is a GREAT advancement for 911 if you ask me. We’ve all heard stories of someone seeking help in innovative ways during an emergency situation. Maybe they call in for a pizza, maybe they text a friend. But now, in Sacramento county you can actually text 911 for help.

“The feature is designed for individuals who cannot call 911 due to physical limitations or if you are in situations that are too dangerous to call 911,” the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department tweeted.

The new text feature if helpful for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. And also in an instance where someone is in danger and has to be quiet. Or, can’t actually ask for help aloud, like in a domestic dispute.

In order to use the new 911 text feature, you have to live in Sacramento county. You must also text in English and only use text—no photos or emojis.
