This should surprise no one, but I am still bawling over this video. This is one reason why fostering is SO important and so helpful. Front Street recently posted a video of a man who had been evicted. His main concern was finding a temporary home for his dog.

And that breaks my heart because I can’t imagine what I’d do to protect my own pets. Because many shelters don’t take in pets as well, Robert, the man in the video, has been sleeping in his car with Meaty, his dog.

“I think that pets are very important to homeless people,” Robert says in the video. “They’re their companion.”

Help Robert keep his beloved dog

Update: A big thanks to everyone who liked, shared, stepped up and donated!! We are happy to announce that we have found a rental home for Robert and Meaty. We will post an update of them in their new place soon. And a big thanks to everyone who has agreed to help foster dogs just like Meaty in the future, the need is huge and the purpose is critical. This man was forced to surrender his beloved dog to our shelter after becoming homeless. Now, he’s hoping someone out there can care for his dog until he gets back on his feet. Robert has a master’s degree, but became homeless after being evicted. He adopted Meaty from our shelter several months ago when he still had a home. Because few homeless shelters allow dogs, he’s been sleeping in his car with Meaty laying on his chest. He refused to take shelter, because he didn’t want Meaty to be cold and alone. Can someone help this deserving man keep the dog he loves? We’ll provide food and supplies if you can provide Meaty with a safe space for a month or so until Robert gets into suitable housing. Please email LRhoades@CityOfSacramento.org if you can help. Meaty is a lovebug, very mellow, and good with other dogs.

The manager of Front Street was so moved that she paid for a few nights in a hotel for the pair. And then social media did what it does best—shared the crap out of the video.

The video has been viewed over half a million times. Because of the shares and comments, a rental home was found for Robert and Meaty.

If this story breaks your heart, and you have some space in your home, considering fostering an animal. There are great programs at Front Street and Bradshaw Animal Shelter. Plus, there are other rescues around town that need help too. It really can make all the difference in someone’s life.
