Californians arrested for crimes will no longer be required to post bail to be released from jail while awaiting their day in court beginning next year, under a bill Gov. Jerry Brown signed Tuesday. However many groups are against this for many reasons. Obviously bail bondsman groups are against this bill because it practically takes away the entire bail bondsman industry. Other groups are against this bill because they believe it gives the judges too much power about who does and does not stay in jail, even for misdemeanors. This bill will require county courts to create risk assessments to determine who should be released while awaiting trial. Ankle monitors could be required for a person’s release, as long as the defendant is not required to pay for it. This is supposed to take into effect starting next year.
