Sheriff Fires His Deputy Who Beat Him In Primary Race [PIC]
Deputy Sheriff Mark Maggs recently beat his boss, Lenny Gramkow, in a South Dakota sheriff election. However, Gramkow took pettiness to a new level by firing Maggs in retaliation, leaving the future sheriff’s family jobless and without health insurance until next year.

While it’s never okay to be a poor sport, Sheriff Lenny Gramkow recently took things to a whole new level.
According to The Washington Post, Gramkow recently ran to be the Republican candidate for sheriff in South Dakota’s Bon Homme County.
However, he also happened to be running against one of his employees, Deputy Sheriff Mark Maggs. Despite Gramkow’s hopes to win the nomination, Maggs easily came out on top and won 878 to 331.
Unfortunately, even though Gramkow knew he lost, he decided he could still strike back. Taking pettiness to a new level, Gramkow summoned Maggs to his office at 7 p.m. when the poles closed. Then, at precisely 7:01 p.m., he gave Maggs a pink slip, firing him.
The letter, signed by Sheriff Lenny Gramkow, says:
“THIS LETTER IS TO INFORM YOU THAT EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY YOU ARE TERMINATED FROM THE POSITION OF DEPUTY SHERIFF. AS OF THIS MOMENT YOU ARE NO LONGER AN EMPLOYEE OF BON HOMME COUNTY.”
Mark Maggs, who has four young children, explained how he felt after receiving the devastating note:
“Then when I got back to my election party and told my wife, she was very emotional. It hit her hard. We knew that meant coming at the end of the month we’d be losing health insurance.”

Gramkow also gave no explanation as to why he was firing Maggs. However, Maggs explained that before the election, Gramkow mentioned firing him if he ran against him in the race.
Sadly, there is little Maggs can do about his firing. The Associated Press described South Dakota’s employment laws, saying:
“[South Dakota is] an employment-at-will state where employees can be fired without cause, with exceptions. The state’s sheriffs also have the authority to hire and fire personnel.”
Thankfully, however, Maggs will begin his tenure as sheriff come January as there are no other candidates in the race. Many have also rallied behind him following his sudden firing. Over 1,400 people signed a petition asking for the reinstatement of Maggs, and the Facebook page for the county’s sheriff’s department is receiving many one-star reviews.
