A 10-month-old puppy died on a United flight from Houston to New York on Monday evening. The owners claim that a flight attendant told them to put the carrier in an overhead compartment.

A passenger sitting behind the owner of the French bulldogĀ  corroborated the claim. June Lara said the flight attendant made the request of the owner shortly after boarding according to KCRA.

The airline released a statement saying:

“This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin. We assume full responsibility…and express our deepest condolences. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.”

I’ve never traveled with my dog because both of them are too big to fit under a seat. Also, the idea of them on a plane without me makes me want to cry. I’d like to think I would argue with the United flight attendant, but you just never know until your in the position.

My heart breaks for the dog owner and her family.
