Marine Veteran & Movie Star R. Lee Ermey Passes Away

R. Lee Ermey, the Marine Corps veteran who became a real-life movie star, has sadly passed away.

According to Pop Culture, representatives for the actor announced his death from pneumonia on Twitter.

His manger, Bill Rogin, said in a statement:

“It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (“The Gunny”) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us, Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.”

Ermey’s most famous onscreen work may very well be his role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the classic film, Full Metal Jacket. While he had originally signed onto the film to be a technical adviser, he famously impressed director Stanley Kubrick with his improvised insults used on the extras. As a result, he managed to receive a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the film. He also had notable performances in the films Mississippi Burning, Se7en, and Toy Story.

On top of his film career, Ermey was also the host of two popular shows on the History Channel: Mail Call and  Lock N’ Load with R. Lee Ermey. He spent a large part of his later career focusing on supporting veterans and advocating for their better care.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nila, and their four children. We wish them the best during this difficult time.

He was 74-years-old.
