Country music star Rory Feek is well-known for his conservative Christian beliefs. However, in his new book, Once Upon a Farm, he revealed that surprisingly family circumstances have led him to view the world in a new light.

According to Taste of Country, Feek is now revealing that his daughter, Hopie Feek, is a lesbian. She came out in the days following the tragic death of Rory’s wife, Joey Feek, in 2016.

While that may seem like bad timing, Hopie had been trying to find a good time to let him know. She had been holding in the secret in for awhile, and she had already been dating her girlfriend, Wendy, for a year. Her mother’s cancer battle was already making things difficult and she didn’t want to add more stress.

However, Rory Feek’s first reaction was not great. He explained:

“What happened next, I’m not really sure. We talked. We talked for a long time. I said some things I shouldn’t have said. Reacting. Trying not to react. The worst of it all, though, was my first reaction. My gut feelings down deep inside … My conservative Christian faith was the first part of me to judge Hopie. To want to push her away. To withhold love from her. And she could feel it. See it in my eyes. And in that moment we had a conversation without any words.”

He also revealed that he kept praying it wasn’t true. He said:

We just kept praying that God would send her the right man, someone who would treat her well and love her for who she is … And He did. Only it wasn’t a man. It’s Wendy. “

After many difficult conversations over the next year-and-a-half, Feek slowly came to accept his daughter. He’s also now accepting of Wendy as well, as she is a “great person.” While he had to “rethink everything I’ve ever thought when it comes to some things,” he realized that his job is to love his daughter no matter what. He explained:

“She gets to make her decisions in life. All of them. I can approve or disapprove, but it’s her life, and she has a right to live it as she chooses.”

Even more, Hopie Feek’s wedding will take place on Rory’s family farm where Joey is buried, and he said:

“And I’m going to be excited about it. It will be a special day for someone who is special to me and her someone special. That is all I need to know.”

However, Rory Feek’s story about accepting his daughter has led some Christian booksellers to not stock his new book. While he feels upset, he’s trying to not let is bother him. He described the situation, saying:

“I get it though, this is tough stuff… because they have their beliefs and want to stand by them. And I want to honor that. But honestly, what is it that they would prefer I do? Shun my daughter? Or not share something that we as a family are going through, just because it’s challenging and divisive?”

Regardless, we wish the best to Hopie Feek and her soon-to-be wife as they get ready for their wedding!
