Chris Janson has received ample recognition for the strong message behind his hit single, “Drunk Girl”. It earned him his two Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year CMA Nominations.

The singer co-wrote the song with Tom Douglas and Scooter Carusoe. Douglas inadvertently gave Janson the initial idea through a commencement speech, reports PopCulture.

While he was giving his speech at his son’s school, Douglas said, “Boys, you’re going to be in a position in college where a young lady is going to be over-served, and when that happens, be a gentleman and take the drunk girl home.'”

While he noted the line at the time, it didn’t really hit Janson as a song idea until years later. He was teaching a songwriting class in a prison, when a sheriff approached him. The sheriff happened to be at the graduation ceremony where Douglas delivered his speech.

“There are a lot of young men in this jail that wouldn’t be spending the next 35 years of their life in this institution,” the sheriff said, “if they’d listened to the admonition in [Douglas’] speech, ‘Take a drunk girl home.'”

The rest is history. Janson hopes that “Drunk Girl” resonates with people and inspires them to make the right call.
