Chris Janson Wrote ‘Drunk Girl’ With Daughters (And Pumpkin Spice Lattes) In Mind

At first glance of the song’s title, Chris Janson’s “Drunk Girl” seems like it could be just another country music party anthem. But listen to it and you’ll quickly know it isn’t anything of the sort.  The thoughtful ballad is about treating young women properly…especially if they’re in a vulnerable situation, like having too much to drink.

“I wrote this with my daughters in mind because, with having daughters, you want a young man to take great care with them, with great respect and honor, no matter what situation they’re in.” He told us prior to his electrifying performance at Nashville in the Neighborhood. “especially as they get older and they get into that ‘drunk girl’ situation, if you will.”

Chris says he also had his boys in mind.

“You want people to love your kids the way that you do but you also want them to love them more…and so I want them to be respectful and walk that line too. It’s an important song.”

The song was written over a year ago, well before the #MeToo movement currently underway. And Chris said when he wrote it, he wasn’t thinking about coinciding with any sort of national cause. He was thinking about his sons, his daughters, and…

“Pumpkin Spice lattes”.

Huh?

“I know that sounds so weird but, when the colder weather hits you think, oh, Pumpkin Spice latte or something holiday-ish, right? This song (Drunk Girl) for whatever reason, makes me feel that way…so when ‘Fix a Drink’ went number one in November, I was like, ‘perfect timing’!”

But then high-profile stories of sexual harassment started making the news, and suddenly the song went from being just a nice song with a good message to an important song with a powerful message.

“It’s just crazy how (that) happens. You can’t really calculate things like that. Nor do we want to.”

But he’s glad that it did.

And we’re glad Chris brought his amazing talents to Roseville for Nashville in the Neighborhood. If you saw it, you know what we’re talking about. If not, hopefully Chris gets back to Sacramento soon.
