If you’ve been using that blue container to collect trash, you might want to reconsider. Because Sacramento is considering charging a fee for households that throw trash in their recycling bins.

Apparently China gets a lot of the West Coast’s recyclables. And they’ve started rejecting shipments because they contain too much garbage. Because China is cracking down, Sacramento is moving in that direction as well. Mostly due to the fact that recycling collection will go from making the county nearly $1 million to costing it roughly the same.

According to the Sacramento Bee, an educational program would be the first step to teach people to properly recycle. Then, the next step would be identifying houses that constantly fill their bins with trash or non-recyclable items.

I thought I knew how to recycle, but now I am feeling a little unsure. I think that having community outreach as a first step is probably a good call. Let’s all learn how to recycle together!

But, maybe step one is stop putting regular trash in your blue recycling bin.
