On a much smaller scale, Pat and I can relate to Dustin Lynch: for several years, we submitted to the ACMs Broadcaster-of-the-year category. Only once did we even get a response: a rejection letter from the Academy addressed to “Pam and Tom”. So we quit entering.

Dustin though, doesn’t need to enter. He just needs to sing and perform at the top of his game and hope it gets noticed. But the sad reality is, sometimes even your best isn’t good enough for some people. Watch below as Dustin reacts openly and honestly to learning that he was passed over by the ACMs this year, even as his song “Small Town Boy” has ruled country radio for the past several months. Why would Dustin share such an honest moment? Lately, he says, he’s been trying to be more authentic in what he posts to social media. He wants fans to not just see the good, but the bad, and everything in between. It’s a gutsy call, but one we applaud because it will undoubtedly make him more relatable; we all have successes, uncertainty and setbacks. The one thing we hope for Dustin is that he realizes acknowledgement from awards shows is just the cherry on top of an already pretty delicious cake, and they aren’t necessary to a long and rewarding career–just take it from us, Pam and Tom.
