King first joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972, replacing bassist Leon Wilkeson, who briefly left the group. According to Taste of Country, King became the band’s guitarist when Wilkeson returned. Thus, the band’s iconic three-guitar sound was born.
Perhaps one of King’s biggest claims to fame is his co-writing credit on “Sweet Home Alabama”. Fun fact: It’s his voice you hear counting in the song before the riff comes in!
Rest in peace, Ed King. You certainly will not be forgotten.
