Free Or Discount Deals For Veterans At These Businesses On Memorial Day

It seems sometimes we have to actually remember what Memorial Day is really all about–honoring veterans, particularly those who gave their lives in service to this country. But any man or woman who ever wore the uniform deserves respect this holiday weekend, so we tip our hats to the following businesses for stepping up and offering free deals or discounts to anyone who’s served (credit to USA Today for providing this list). As always, participation could vary so it’s a good idea to check with your local location ahead of time to make sure.

Ace Hardware: On Saturday, the hardware franchise is giving away one million 8×12 American flags and for every one handed out, Ace will donate another to local VFW for marking veterans’ graves on Memorial Day

Logan’s Roadhouse: veterans and active duty military get a free meal on Monday (with proof of service) between 3 and 6pm

McCormick and Schmick’s: Veterans, active military personnel, Gold Star parents and spouses and National Guard get a free entree Monday.

Outback Steakhouse: Through Monday, active military, veterans, police officers and firefighters with valid state or federal identification get 20% off. There’s also a 10% everyday Heroes Discount for servicemen and women, police officers and firefighters

Rubios: All military and veterans get a free adult entree with the purchase of another adult entrée Monday with their military ID and a coupon which can be downloaded from rubios.com

Hometown Buffet: The chain offers a 15% daily military discount to all active duty, reserve or retired military personnel in uniform or with a valid ID. There’s a different discount on Mondays for Military Mondays.

Hooters: Veterans and active military eat free from a special menu Monday with a military identification and drink purchase. Hooters also offers a daily 10% military discount and a special 20% military discount every Tuesday throughout the year at participating locations.

Goodyear: Active and retired military can make an appointment for Goodyear and Just Tires through Monday for a free car care check and 10% off Goodyear Tires. Valid ID is required and appointments can be booked for services performed through June 13.

Sleep Number: Through June 2, active military and veterans save an extra $100 on any sale price when they get a promo code at www.sleepnumber.com/military.

Big 5 Sporting Goods: 10% off entire purchase for active duty, reserve military, retirees, veterans, spouses and dependent children with military ID or veteran status on driver’s license. In-store only.

Nike: Active, veteran, retired and reservists, spouses and dependents of active personnel get a 10% military discount at Nike.com and Nike, Converse and Hurley stores. To get the discount online, verification of eligibility is required and a military ID is required to get in-store savings.

O’Reilly Auto Parts: n-store discount of 10% off retail price for most items for active duty, reserve members, retired service members and veterans with valid ID. Immediate family members of active duty or veterans are eligible for discount if they have a government issued dependent ID card (DD form 1173 or 1173-1).

In Sacramento…

Sacramento County Fair: Active military personnel with appropriate IDs will be admitted free to the Sacramento County Fair on Memorial Day.

Raging Waters: The water park at Cal Expo, will admit both veterans and military personnel for free all weekend long.

Seven local museums are admitting military personnel and their families for free up until Labor Day. The participating museums are: the Aerospace Museum of California, the California Automobile Museum, the California Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, Fairytale Town, the Powerhouse Science Center and the Sacramento History Museum. Some museums may be closed on Monday.

Former military personnel and Boy Scouts will observe the holiday at the New Auburn Cemetery (1040 Collins Drive, Auburn) at 9 a.m. Monday, where wreaths will be presented at the gravesite and the Auburn Area Honor Guard will deliver a rifle salute.

Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park (4701 Marysville Blvd., Sacramento) will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. with a presentation of colors.

Mount Vernon Memorial Park (8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks), which is home to a veterans’ garden, will host a large ceremony with a military band at 11 a.m.

A ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery (5810 Midway Road, Dixon), a Veterans Affairs cemetery.

A reading of the names will be held at 7 a.m. Sunday morning at the Vietnam Memorial in Capitol Park.
