So this takes body modification to an entirely new level. A woman gave her belly button to her boyfriend. Not, like, got a piercing of his choosing, no. She had it surgically removed, and actually handed it to him.

There’s not a whole bunch more to the story, really. This woman, 23-year-old Paulina Casillas Landeros, is a “body modification fanatic.” She’s got piercings, tattoos, and she even had her tongue split. Yes, like a lizard. Anyway, she got an idea one day; something to give her boyfriend as “an ultimate token of love.” They’re not together any more, but she says that they remain close friends, and that he will always keep it, since he understands the meaning behind it. She does say now that she regrets that decision, not because the relationship didn’t last, but because of the recovery. Paulina says that the doctors didn’t give the best advice for how to care for the wound. During the healing process, the area became infected, and she was bedridden for some time. She added that the opening will never close completely, as well.

Why did she do it in the first place? Well, she says that she never had the best connection with her family growing up. Paulina added that she wanted to “dehumanize” herself, which is how she got interested in body modification. She regrets it now after reconnecting with her family. “I do regret it when I put myself in my mum’s position, it must have been devastating for her, she was so sad,” Paulina says. She added “I can’t imagine how it must feel, your own child wanting to break all their connection to you… If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t do it again, it was impulsive, reckless and I hurt a lot of people.” See more of Paulina’s story, and – if you dare, some pictures of the belly button – over here.
