“I Should Probably Go To Bed” Carries Influences Of Queen, Beach Boys
They had no idea how many streams the song has until Pat told them!

For a couple guys who are great on social media – from Facebook to Tik Tok- it’s sort of refreshing to know that Dan + Shay apparently don’t pay close attention to the internet data that should really matter most to them: stream numbers. Any time you listen to an artist’s song online without outright purchasing it (IE via a subscription platform like Apple Music or Spotify), that listen counts as one stream. In the case of Dan + Shay’s latest hit, “I Should Probably Go To Bed“, that’s adding up to a lot of streams: 175 million and counting, as Pat pointed out when we talked with them recently.
“That’s insane.” Replied Dan Smyer, with Shay Mooney chiming in, “That’s crazy. I didn’t know it had that many streams, so thanks for making my day. Wow.”
One of the appealing things about the song- as has been noted by fans and music writers alike- is it’s similarity to some of the music put out by the legendary rock band Queen. Huge vocals, sweeping harmonies, big melody…it’s all there. Was that intentional?
“I’m looking over at Dan right now in his Queen shirt...” Shay laughed. “But it was man. That was one of the influences, honestly, that we kinda pulled from” he continued, also noting that there’s a bit of “Pet Sounds” from the Beach Boys, too and, yep, now that you mention it….
Shay praised Dan’s production talents and also noted that it was actually nice to have the time, during quarantine, to get the song exactly right. Maybe it’s that kind of attention to detail-to their music- that pulls their attention away from the numbers their music racks up. Either way, it’s refreshing, and here’s hoping Dan + Shay are racking up a lot of hits and huge streaming numbers for a long time to come.
