Well this is not good news. The last known male northern white rhino is not faring well.
Sudan is 45, which is old for the subspecies of rhino according to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The organization made the announcement on Facebook and said that Sudan’s future isn’t looking bright.
He is old for his species and they don’t want him to have to suffer unnecessarily.
He apparently has an infection in his right hind leg. The fate of the northern white rhino species rests on the two females who currently live with Sudan.
According to USA Today, conservationists plan to use in vitro fertilization as a way to save the subspecies from extinction. So, hopefully the treatments are successful.
Because some people believe their horns cure diseases, rhinos are targeted by poachers.
