Uber would be expensive, but doable. Friends. Parents. Borrow a family member’s car. These are all good ways to get to a concert the next state over. Stealing a plane, well, that’s not a super way to get things done.

This 18-year-old really wanted to go to a concert. Like, really. So he concocted a plan to do so. He would fly! But airplane tickets are expensive, so the next best option – steal a plane! He hopped a fence at the airport around 2:30 in the morning. Airport personnel noticed something was weird and were trying to make contact. The teen actually made it to one of the planes that was parked. He got into the plane, closed the door behind him, and made it into the cockpit.

You can see the problem here.

Airport security got to the plane before anything else happened. They shined a light into the cockpit and saw the teen sitting in the captain’s chair. But, once the teen looked into the light, he was identified. Apparently he has had several run-ins with this particular airport security team before. Luckily, before the plane was started, they were able to get into the plane and get the teen out. He was arrested and charged with commercial burglary and attempted theft. Those aren’t charges to sneeze at either, apparently they can carry a 3 to 10 year sentence. See some more info on the story here.

The best part though is that the teen actually thought he could just start it up and go. There are a whole bunch of procedures, checks, lists, and work to go through. Its not like starting grandma’s Buick. The teen even said, according to police, that “he didn’t believe there was much more to the task than pushing buttons and pulling levers.”
