Even though Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja has now spent most of his life in civilization, he still finds human life difficult.

The 72-year-old Spaniard had a unique childhood, to say the least: he spent his formative years with wolves. According to El País, the wolf pack accepted him as its own when he was a kid. He slept in caves with the wolves and they taught him how to survive in the wilderness.

The Civil Guard found Marcos when he was 19 and took him away from his wolf family. It was traumatic for him, and he never fully recovered. He discovered how cruel humans can be and never fully integrated back into society. An environmental group called Amig@s das Arbores is currently helping raise money for Marcos to help insulate his house and provide him with basic necessities. They hope to help get him money for things that his pension won’t cover.

So how did Marcos end up raised by wolves?

He was born in 1946. His mom died giving birth when Marcos was three, and his dad left to live with another woman. They brought him to the mountains to replace an old goatherd. The man began teaching Marcos how to care for the animals, but suddenly died, leaving Marcos alone at age seven. He then found his wolf pack.

Marcos finds human life difficult:

“I think they laugh at me because I don’t know about politics or soccer.”

His doctor responded:

“Laugh back at them. Everyone knows less than you.”

Although Marcos has had run-ins with bad folks in his life, he also has found good people who only want to help. He feels the most comfortable with kids. Forest officer Xosé Santos, a member of Amig@s das Arbores, said:

“It’s amazing how he enthralls the children with his life experience.”
