This is actually really cool! I had no idea since 2010 that the US Mint had released 56 newly designed quarters as part of their America the Beautiful Quarters Program, the new National Parks.

This will be the first special edition quarter to be released, as its release date will be February 3rd.

The U.S. Mint’s website describes the quarter as follows: “The image evokes the remarkable care and energy that this species puts into their offspring. The design is intended to promote awareness to the species’ threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa is the only park in the United States that is home to the Samoan fruit bat.”

This specific quarter dollar will celebrate American Samoa and features a mother fruit bat and her pup hanging upside down.
