Dreaming of going to med school, but afraid of how long the debt will follow you? New York University is taking steps to alleviate that issue by offering free tuition to all med students.

NYU School of Medicine made an announcement on Aug. 16 that scholarships will be open to current and future students. Free tuition is open to all regardless of need or merit. NYU is the only top-10 ranked medical school that’s offering such a scholarship.

Med students get the entire yearly tuition of $55,018 covered excluding room and board.

The university hopes that waiving the tuition will reshape the medical field. As it stands, more med school graduates tend to go after the higher paying positions in order to pay off student loans. That means “less lucrative fields like primary care, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology” take the blow.

NYU hopes that this scholarship will pave the way for more diversity within in healthcare and help with physician shortages.

So if the only thing holding you back from medicine was fear of debt, now you don’t need to worry.
