I don’t mean “under jail” as-in “are now arrested,” I mean literally under the jail. The prisoners (and a guard or two) were busted for mining diamonds under the very jail they were in. They dug the mine and were actually getting diamonds out of it before getting caught.

This might be the only jail anyone would truthful want to go to. I don’t know why or how anyone discovered that there were diamonds under the jail, but there they are. This happened in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the bust happened after suspicions started growing. No, mining equipment or loud noises didn’t seem to tip anyone off. The real issue at hand was that prisoners, whose sentences were up, were refusing to leave. The prisoners were literally staying in jail, past their sentence.

I don’t know about you, but I never plan on going to jail, especially not staying past my welcome. I’d say it’s a pretty obvious situation when inmates are refusing to leave. Nobody WANTS to go to jail, you know? A man named Gérard Kombozi is the head of Justice there, and he says that anyone using it in the future will be punished. Well, I’d certainly hope so. He says in full, “here are some prisoners who have served their sentences but who refuse to leave this prison facility… More than 30 people, including a prison guard, were found there the day the provincial justice division raided the site. Some were doing finishing work on their boxes, while others were in farm holes. Diggers testified that they found and sold diamonds of 0.1 and 0.15 grams.”

So not only were they finding diamonds under a prison, there were more than 30 people in on it, including a guard. And not only that, they were making some pretty good money off of the finds. How’s that for a prison sentence? Well, we’re sure it was very dirty work, but what a strange story. Check out some more here.
