Winters are cold in Topeka, Kansas. Wind, snow and temperatures frequently reach below zero. Franklin County deputies kept getting calls from concerned Topeka citizens about a woman walking along highway 59. Every day she’d walk from the nearby town of Ottawa to Princeton. That’s a distance of 6 miles. Responding deputies would drive out and end up giving her a ride. She explained that she worked at Love’s Truck Stop in Ottawa and since she had no transportation the young single mother of 2 had no choice but to walk. She needed the job to take care of her 2 young children and make sure they had food to eat and a place to live.

After 2 weeks the deputies who were being called out to help this woman met and decided they needed to do something. The put the word out to businesses and friends they knew along with taking up their own collection. Inside of a week they were able to present the woman with a van complete with registration, 2 car seats, a grocery store gift card, car insurance paid up for a year and $200 in cash. The woman’s reaction is absolutely the stuff that makes the Christmas season so special.
