The Far Side Is Back! Sort Of…

The comic’s cartoonist has posted some new cartoons…the first in years.

If, like me, you were a fan of Gary Larson’s Far Side cartoons, then we could be friends.

The offbeat single panel drawings were a staple for anyone with a slightly twisted sense of humor and that, apparently, was a lot of us. The Far Side was, for it’s time, the most popular cartoon in the U.S. With its abstractedly bizarro assortment of talking dogs, plotting cats, puzzled scientists and deer born with birth marks shaped like targets, The Far Side was often laugh out loud funny, way back before LOL ever became a thing.

Then, citing burn-out, and much to the disappointment of his legions of fans, Larson put away his pen and paper in 1995 and has lived mostly under the radar ever since.

Until this week.

In an announcement on the Far Side website, Larson said upon discovering the tablet, “…something totally unexpected happened: within moments, I was having fun drawing again. I was stunned at all the tools the thing offered, all the creative potential it contained. I simply had no idea how far these things had evolved. Perhaps fittingly, the first thing I drew was a caveman.”

And he even posted new cartoons! Only a few though, so don’t get too excited…although he strongly hints that more are to come. Two made me laugh out loud though, just like the old days. If you’re a fan, you can see the new cartoons (which look amazing) here

And let’s hope this is a taste of things to come. 2020 could really use something positive.
