U-Haul to Stop Hiring Smokers In 2020
By Pacey on January 2, 2020
There are states where it is illegal to NOT hire someone just because of their nicotine use. Depending on how you stand on this, it may be lucky or unfortunately that California does not allow employers to NOT hire someone based on their nicotine use.
Howver U-Haul has decided to not hire nicotine users in over 20 states. These states include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, where the company’s corporate headquarters is in Phoenix.
This policy will go into effect February 1st, and will not apply to current employees of U-Haul.
“We are deeply invested in the well-being of our team members,” said a statement from Jessica Lopez, U-Haul’s chief of staff. “Nicotine products are addictive and pose a variety of serious health risks. This policy is a responsible step in fostering a culture of wellness at U-Haul, with the goal of helping our team members on their health journey.”
