On May 9, members of the Westboro Baptist Church plan to protest outside of two different area schools. First, they will be outside of Mira Loma High School from 7:15 to 7:45 AM. Then, they plan to move to Rocklin Academy Gateway from 8:30 to 9:00 AM.

The Sacramento Bee states that the protest is over Kaelin Swaney being named Teacher of the Year. Swaney famously read a story about a transgender youth during story time last year.

However, it isn’t clear as to Westboro Baptist Church is also visiting Mira Loma.

San Juan Unified School District spokeswoman Raj Rai said perhaps it’s due to the International Baccalaureate program. The program draws many minority students to the school.

Rocklin Academy Family of Schools superintendent Robin Stout, also talked to the Bee. “Westboro’s hateful rhetoric does not reflect our school or community’s values,” she said.

Westboro Baptist Church is classified as a hate group by multiple organizations. Rightfully so, if you ask me.

Additionally, the Gender Health Center is planning a counter protest in Rocklin at the same time.
