Maren Morris is laying down the groundwork for her next album. She says that although she’s hanging on to her country roots, she’s also playing with new sounds.

She said in a recent interview:

“It’s still really soulful and rooted in country but there’s still like these R&B vibes to it and it’s kind of like the first one, it was a little bit of everything.”

According to Taste of Country, she still has 10 writing sessions before she’s thinking of stepping foot in the studio. One of the new songwriting collaborators she’s working with is Julian Bunetta. Julian wrote several of One Direction’s songs, as well as Niall Horan’s “Slow Hands” and Thomas Rhett’s “Craving You.”

Maren continued:

I’m kind of getting out of my comfort zone on this next record but I’m still writing with a lot of the same friends of mine that were on the first. That kind of shapes the sound for me is just connecting the dots of all the songs. So it’s a little bit of everything but still really rooted in a country where I’ll always be.”

She’s going to be on the road this summer with Niall Horan for his Flicker Tour. Maren said that she needs to time things out in order to make sure she allots herself enough time to work on the second record:

I have to do a lot of preproduction before the summer because I’m going out with Niall Horan. There’s no in-between going home dates. So album two, it’s a big one.
