Raising kids can be a difficult job. Especially when you’re actually their grandparents, and the reason you’re caring for them is because your own son and his wife – the kids’ parents – died several months earlier in a motorcycle crash.

Ben Keryluke lost his son and daughter-in-law (Brent and Nicole Keryluke) in a motorcycle crash back in May. Brent had a classic car that he restored, a 1973 Pontiac Parisienne (sold in the Canadian market). His parents ended up getting the car, which means a lot to them since it was their son’s. But being retired and on limited income, it quickly became apparent that the car would have to be sold to help care for the children.

Ben took the car to a local auction house, trusting them to sell the car. Word got around about the story surrounding the family and the car. People showed up to bid on the car. Bids started coming in, although nobody actually ended up taking the car home. The car sold once for $29,000. The buyer gave it back to the auction house to sell again, this time bringing in $30,000. That buyer then gave it back to the auction house who sold it for $20,000. That buyer then gave the car directly back to Ben and the family. Here’s a video from one of the auctions that started getting emotional:

All in all, the car sold three times, and still went back to the family. Other donations started coming in for the family as well. So far, the family has been given about $100,000 to help care for the children. The family also gets to keep the car their father loved so much. There’s more information on the family and their story here.
