This just completely pissed me off! Apparently in Virginia dogs are still considered just “property” and owners are able to do with them what they want in their will. A Virginia woman passed away and required in her will that her dog be put down immediately and buried with her.

According to WWBT, following the woman’s death, the dog was put in the custody of Chesterfield County Animal Services, but two weeks later, after the will was executed, Emma was picked up and put down.

The manager of the shelter pleaded to be able to keep the dog and put her with another family, but unfortunately they went with exactly what the will  said.

Hopefully this story going viral will change laws in how animals are treated across the country when the owner passes away.
