This breaks my heart. As of this morning, the Camp Fire was at 45% containment. But the smoke and levels of particulate matter continue to fill the air in Northern California. In fact, Thursday was the second worst air quality day on record in Sacramento history. According to the Sacramento Bee, the Air Quality Index averaged 314 on Thursday.

Areas in Arden Arcade came in at over 400 and downtown Sacramento. The AQI scale tops out at 500 and anything over 300 is considered hazardous. The only other day worse than this week was in 2014 after the King Fire started in El Dorado County.

Purple Air, an air quality monitoring network says Northern California has the dirtiest air in the world right now. It currently tops both India and China.  Chico, Oroville and Sacramento have all reached the hazardous level this week.

Public officials are recommending that people stay inside or wear an N95 mask when outdoors. However, the county has recently advised against the masks as they might do more harm than good.
