The release date for the highly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed Wonder Woman film, has been pushed back to summer of 2020.
According to Yahoo, Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, announced the news on social media. The original premiere date of November 1, 2019 was changed to June 5, 2020. Gadot expressed her excitement and anticipation for the upcoming film, saying that this new release date provided a better release window for the Wonder Woman sequel.
This news most likely comes from growing amount of films releasing next fall, including DC’s other comic film, Joker, releasing October 4. With the release date changed to June of next year, Wonder Woman 1984 will release during the same Memorial Day time frame that the original released in 2017.
The head of domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein, released a statement saying: “We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”
The first Wonder Woman film broke box-office records, becoming the highest grossing female-led and female-directed superhero movie. The film went on to become the highest-grossing film of summer 2017, earning $821.8M worldwide.
