Tennis legend Serena Williams recently gave birth to her first daughter, Alexis Olympia, with husband Alexis Ohanian. While that’s a day she will probably look back upon fondly, the 24 hours afterward are a totally different story…
According to TMZ, Williams is now revealing that she almost died the day after she gave birth!
The process began with an emergency C-section on September 1st. Although that surgery went smoothly, the tennis star later began suffering from a deadly blood clot in her lungs. While she was able to contact doctors for help, she began coughing so hard that she re-opened her C-section wound.
This lead to another surgery, but this only uncovered even more bad news. She explained in an essay published through CNN:
“The doctors found a large hematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in my abdomen. And then I returned to the operating room for a procedure that prevents clots from traveling to my lungs.”
Thankfully, after all of that, she came out alive and in good spirits, and was later able to leave the hospital. However, she did have to spend the next 6 weeks in bed recovering.
Following her medical ordeal, she gave thanks to all the doctors and nurses that helped her get through it. She also is urging people to donate to UNICEF, because they provide medical services to mothers and children around the world.
We are so glad Serena Williams is doing okay after all of that and we wish her and her daughter the best.
